The fifth round of the Water Breakthrough Challenge (‘Breakthrough 5’) will make up to £40 million available to highly collaborative water-sector innovations, aiming to deliver benefits for customers, society and the environment.
Fund Details
Ofwat is seeking ideas that address big challenges facing the water sector, aligned with the four strategic innovation themes:
- Responding and adapting to climate change, including achieving the sector ambitions of net zero carbon, zero waste and zero leakage
- Protecting and enhancing the environment and natural systems, to protect current and future customers from the impacts of extreme weather and pollution
- Delivering long-term operational resilience and understanding infrastructure risks to customers and the environment, finding solutions to mitigate these in sustainable and efficient ways
- Testing new ways of conducting core activities to deliver the services customers and society need, expect and value both now and in the future
Eligibility
The lead entrant to Breakthrough 5 must be one of the licensed regional water only and water and wastewater companies, or new entrant water and wastewater companies (NAVs) in England and Wales. Ofwat strongly encourages lead entrants to enter Breakthrough 5 in partnership or consortia.
You will be asked to register for a recording slot (Zoom call) where a three-minute pitch from the entry team will be recorded. This will be used to aid the understanding of your assessors when reviewing your entry and should be the same presentation that you would use if invited to present to judges.
You will need to register for a recording slot no later than 20 December 2024 at 5pm (GMT). Please note that 20 December 2024 will be the final day of pitch recordings, you will not be able to book and/or record after this date.
